  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1/2 cup sugar (for coating)
  • 1 cup pastry cream or whipped cream

Instructions

  1. Prepare the yeast mixture by dissolving yeast in warm milk; let sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Combine flour, sugar, and salt in a mixing bowl. Cut in cold butter until crumbly.
  3. Add the yeast mixture, egg, and vanilla, mixing until you form a soft dough.
  4. Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes until smooth; wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour.
  5. Roll out chilled dough into a rectangle and fold it like a letter; repeat this folding process three times for layering.
  6. Cut out desired doughnut shapes from the layered dough; let rise for about 30 minutes.
  7. Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) and fry each cronut for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  8. Roll in sugar while warm and fill with pastry cream or whipped cream before serving.
